The AMC CAT MCQ examination is a computer-administered test consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions and lasts 3.5 hours. It is delivered in a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format, meaning each candidate receives a customised examination based on their responses.
Questions are selected from the AMC question pool. At least half are from previously calibrated questions, while the remainder are new questions that undergo inspection and calibration before being used for scoring.
The CAT system adjusts the difficulty of subsequent questions according to the candidate’s responses and continually updates the ability estimate throughout the examination.
The examination tests knowledge of the principles and practice of medicine across areas including general practice, internal medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology.
The AMC Clinical Examination is a 16-station examination designed to assess candidates across a range of clinical tasks. All candidates in a clinical examination session are assessed using the same stations.
In addition to the 16 assessed stations, there are four rest stations, which are unscored and provide candidates with an opportunity to take a break.
Each station lasts 10 minutes, including two minutes for changeover and reading time and eight minutes of assessment time.
An examiner may be present at the station, or the station may be marked remotely. Stations may involve actual patients, simulated patients, telephone consultations, models, equipment, or video patient presentations. Additional materials, such as prescription pads and charts, may also be used during the examination.
To sit the AMC examination, you first need to obtain an AMC authorisation through your AMC account.
The authorisation is valid for 12 months for scheduling an examination event. Once authorised, you schedule your examination directly through Pearson VUE, which provides the examination venues and scheduling system.
Because examination venues can have limited capacity, the AMC advises candidates to schedule as soon as possible within their authorisation period.
